How to Use the Stair Calculator

  1. Measure Total Rise: Stand on the bottom floor and measure straight up to the top finished floor/landing. Enter this in feet and inches. Accuracy matters—measure to the nearest 1/8th of an inch.
  2. Select Building Code: The calculator defaults to the standard IRC (International Residential Code) which mandates a maximum riser of 7 3/4″ and a minimum tread of 10″. If you are building commercial stairs or have custom local codes, change the dropdown.
  3. Calculate: The tool will figure out exactly how many steps you need so that every single riser is the exact same height.

Mastering Stair Riser Height: The Geometry of a Perfect Staircase

Building a set of stairs is often viewed as the ultimate test of a DIY carpenter’s skill. You can build a deck slightly out of square, and nobody will notice. But if you miscalculate your stair riser height by even a fraction of an inch, the human body will notice instantly.

Have you ever walked up a flight of stairs and violently tripped on the top step, or felt like you were awkwardly marching up a ladder? That is the result of bad stair math. Your brain goes on “autopilot” when climbing stairs, assuming every step is identical to the millimeter. If one riser is taller than the rest, disaster strikes.

The Golden Rule of Stair Geometry

Before diving into codes, you need to understand the rhythm of human walking. Architects and builders rely on a historic guideline often called the “17-18 Rule” or the “7-11 Rule.” It states that the riser height plus the tread depth should equal roughly 17 to 18 inches.

Why? Because a steeper stair (taller riser) requires a shorter tread so you don’t overextend your stride. A shallower stair requires a longer tread. A standard, highly comfortable indoor staircase usually aims for a 7-inch rise and an 11-inch run. This ratio creates an ergonomic 30 to 35-degree angle of ascent.

The First Rule of Cutting Stringers

Safety is the primary reason strict building codes exist for staircases. If you are building stairs in a residential home or deck, you are likely bound by the International Residential Code (IRC). The standard IRC rules dictate:

  • Maximum Riser Height: 7 ¾ inches (7.75″).
  • Minimum Tread Depth: 10 inches (though many prefer 11″).

Commercial stairs, often governed by OSHA, have different requirements, usually allowing for a slightly steeper, more compact staircase with a max riser of 9.5 inches. Always select the proper code in the calculator to ensure your project passes inspection.

How the Math Actually Works

Let’s say you measure your deck, and it is exactly 55 inches off the ground. How do you find the riser height?

First, you divide the total rise by the maximum allowed riser height (7.75″).
55 ÷ 7.75 = 7.09

You can’t have 7.09 steps. So, you round up to the next whole number. You need 8 risers. Now, you divide the total rise by the number of risers.
55 ÷ 8 = 6.875 inches
